Aeration, the process of removing “plugs” of soil, is probably the single best thing you can do for your lawn.
Aeration provides a number of proven benefits. First, it breaks up soil compaction, allowing oxygen and water to get down to the root zone so grass can grow thicker and healthier. Secondly, it provides good conditions for over seeding, which allows new grass to establish itself and help fill out thin areas. Annual aeration is a great way to maintain a healthy lawn, but it is a bit tricky. The easiest way to aerate is with a machine called a Core Aerator, but leasing and transporting these bulky devices can be a chore.
