Signs Your Lawn Needs Seeding Service

Even a healthy, well-tended lawn grows thinner over time. When your grass is looking lackluster, an overseeding service will help it grow stronger and keep your lawn looking its best. Here are some signs that indicate your lawn will benefit from reseeding:

  • Seasonal Changes: During the spring and fall when temperatures and conditions change, lawn seeding service can keep mild-climate lawns looking lush and green through each season.
  • Green Up Thin or Bare Patches: Heavy foot traffic, a family picnic, or happy pets can cause periodic wear and tear on your lawn. Overseeding makes it lush and green again.
  • After Dethatching and Aerating: Periodic dethatching and aeration keep your lawn healthy. Reseeding the lawn after this care is ideal.
  • Repair Pest Damage: After ridding your property of grubs or voles, overseeding the lawn can repair any damage.
  • It’s Been Four Years: While a healthy lawn thrives with yearly reseeding, if you have not overseeded in four or more years, it’s time to give your lawn a much-needed refresh.

What to Expect During Our Overseeding Service

For best results, the lawn should be mown, aerated, and well-watered but not saturated before our overseeding service. Here’s our process:

  • We thoroughly reseed your lawn, applying the appropriate seed blend in two directions to ensure an even application with no gaps.
  • We add extra seed to locations that have become thin or bare.
  • We ask that you water your turf several times a day for the first seven to 10 days to ensure the seedlings have the optimal conditions to germinate and grow.
  • After the first 10 days, watering can taper off. After 14 days, you can mow your refreshed grass! Take no more than the top 30% off the grass blades.
  • Plan to fertilize your lawn within six to eight weeks of our lawn seeding service.

Frequently Asked Questions About Lawn Seed Service

When is the best time for lawn seeding service?

The best time for overseeding a lawn is in the spring or fall, following aeration. Spring and fall temperatures give the fresh grass seed warm soil and ample sunny days to sprout, root, and grow before the weather turns.

Do I need to have my lawn aerated before lawn seeding service?

Yes, aerating the lawn loosens compacted soil and breaks up the thatch that develops. This allows easy and direct soil contact for the seeds while water, air, and nutrients flow freely, supporting the healthy development of the new grass seeds.

When it comes to lawn seeding service, does it matter what type of grass I have?

Yes, cool-season grasses and those that thrive in shady spots are best overseeded in the fall. These include Kentucky bluegrass, fine fescue, tall fescue, and perennial ryegrass. Warm-season grasses, such as Bermuda, Zoysia, Bahia, and St. Augustine grasses, do best when reseeded in the spring. Lawn Pride’s overseeding service uses a blend of seeds best suited to your climate and specific property.

What type of seed is used for overseeding service?

Lawn Pride overseeds your lawn using a quality blend of grass seeds most appropriate for your type of grass, climate, the season, and your lawn’s makeup. We also take into account the amount of sunshine it receives to ensure the new seed can thrive.

What are the long-term benefits of overseeding?

Reseeding reduces erosion by increasing lawn density. This also deters pests, blocks weeds, and makes your grass more disease-resistant. Lawn seeding service makes your grass thicker, greener, and more beautiful.

Should grass seed be raked into soil?

Grass seeds must be in direct contact with the soil to germinate and grow. However, it does not need to be raked in or covered if it is on soil. In fact, burying the seed with more than ¼ inch of soil can impair germination. That’s why overseeding your lawn following aeration is ideal timing. The seeds easily contact bare soil where the plugs are removed.

Can you overseed over dead grass?

Before we reseed over dead grass, we will determine the reason(s) for the die-off and rectify the issue(s) so the new seed doesn’t die, too. Once any issues have been addressed, overseeding over dead grass is an excellent way to revitalize and regreen a patch of yellowed or browned grass. Rake the dead grass to loosen up the thatch and allow the fresh grass seed to come into contact with the soil.
