For best results, the lawn should be mown, aerated, and well-watered but not saturated before our overseeding service. We ask that you water your turf several times a day for the first seven to 10 days to ensure the seedlings have the optimal conditions to germinate and grow. After the first 10 days, watering can taper off. After 14 days, you can mow your refreshed grass! Take no more than the top 30% off the grass blades. Plan to fertilize your lawn within six to eight weeks of our lawn seeding service.

Yes, lawn aerating loosens compacted soil and breaks up the thatch that develops. This allows easy and direct soil contact for the seeds while water, air, and nutrients flow freely, supporting the healthy development of the new grass seeds.  

Yes, cool-season grasses and those that thrive in shady spots are best overseeded in the fall. These include Kentucky bluegrass, fine fescue, tall fescue, and perennial ryegrass. Warm-season grasses, such as Bermuda, Zoysia, Bahia, and St. Augustine grasses, do best when reseeded in the spring. Grass seeds must be in direct contact with the soil to germinate and grow. However, it does not need to be raked in or covered if it is on soil. In fact, burying the seed with more than ¼ inch of soil can impair germination. That’s why overseeding your lawn following aeration is ideal timing. The seeds easily contact bare soil where the plugs are removed.

Before we reseed over dead grass, we will determine the reason(s) for the die-off and rectify the issue(s) so the new seed doesn’t die. Once any issues have been addressed, overseeding over dead grass is an excellent way to revitalize and regreen a patch of yellowed or browned grass. Rake the dead grass to loosen the thatch and let the fresh grass seed contact the soil.

Northern: Cool-season grass lawns often include lawn aeration combined with overseeding. This is the single best thing you could do for your lawn. This process breaks up soil compaction, providing a path for more air, nutrients, and water to the root zone.

Southern: Warm-season grass lawns are often overseeded with Ryegrass in the fall to provide a green lawn when the existing grass has gone dormant in the winter months. The Ryegrass will die off as temperatures rise in the spring, making way for the return of the warm season grasses like Bermuda grass.
